Rope Making

On Tuesday, April 25, the fifth grade participated in a rope-making workshop with Miss Julie from Mystic Seaport. Students learned about the different materials used in making rope and discussed the importance of ropes in colonial maritime settings.

During the workshop, students had the opportunity to comb fiber, spin fiber into thread, work as a team to twist twine into strong rope, and even use fiber scraps to create something called a 'baggywrinkle', used to cushion sails and rigging.
Students very much enjoyed this hands-on experience thanks to our continued involvement in a generous grant program.
